An iron leg, shorts – with this appearance a smuggler caused a stir at the border. Included: seven adults and two children. The smuggler fell into the police net.
At first glance, it was clear to officials in Pamhagen that the man behind the wheel of a Volvo car was likely a tractor-trailer. In addition to the driver, seven adults and two children were sitting close together in the car, or more passengers than allowed.
Tugboat with prosthesis underway
The suspect only really surprised the police and soldiers when he tried to get out of the car. That was not easy for the Moldovan. The man had an iron prosthesis and had to carefully squeeze himself out of the car. He eventually stood in front of the border guards in shorts, a little wobbly with his artificial leg.
Accomplice refused to testify
Shortly afterwards the handcuffs clicked. The car occupants were actually refugees who had no passports or other official documents. The Turkish-Kurdish families applied for asylum. With the help of the federal army, they were taken to Nickelsdorf for interrogation. The accomplice of a smuggling gang refused to make any statement after his arrest. He was transferred to Eisenstadt and taken into custody.
Tugboat hotspot in the Neusiedl am See district
The Moldovan is one of the 290 accomplices of the smuggling mafia who have already been taken out of circulation in Burgenland this year. The Neusiedl am See district has been the hotspot for months. Most of the nearly 30,000 refugees apprehended since January are at border crossings such as Nickelsdorf, Andau or Deutsch Jahrndorf. For comparison: 365 smugglers were arrested in Burgenland in 2022, 169 in 2021.
