Two young women are lost on the Rax. Their rescuers escorted the two to the scene using a cell phone app.
The setting for the impending mountain drama was the challenging Teufelsbadstubensteig on the Rax. It was right there that a 21-year-old and her friend (22) were in distress and at risk of falling. Desperate, the two alpinists made a distress call, but this only gave the mountain rescuers at the base in Reichenau the approximate location. What made matters even more difficult was that the search was impossible even from above – that is, from a helicopter piloted by the helpers – due to the strong winds.
Fast help thanks to WhatsApp
But then one of the mountain climbers had a potentially life-saving idea. In a race against time – the battery power of the mobile phones was dwindling more and more – the woman activated the WhatsApp live connection. The two teams, who had now left the valley, were able to establish telephone contact. The volunteers shouted in the growing dusk and eventually picked up the calls for help acoustically.
The two Styrian women were eventually able to be led unharmed but completely exhausted over the so-called Wachhüttelkamm to the Höllentaller national road, where they arrived relieved shortly after 5 p.m.
This summer, the blue-and-yellow mountain rescue service had to be deployed at least once a day on average. Largely due to carelessness in mountaineering. “The main cause of rescue operations is poor preparation for the treks, poor fitness and a lack of equipment,” warns mountain rescue manager Matthias Cernusca.
