An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck Nepal late Friday evening. According to a report in the Times of India, the earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi, India. There were initially no reliable reports of deaths or injuries.
Injuries are feared. According to the American Earthquake Observatory USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of about 18 kilometers. The center was about 400 kilometers northeast of the capital Kathmandu.
The Himalayan region, in which Nepal is located, is geologically very active. The Indian continental plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian plate at a rate of about two centimeters per year, repeatedly causing strong earthquakes.
About eight years ago, in the spring of 2015, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 (7.6 according to Nepalese data) shook the area around the capital Kathmandu. At the time, 9,000 people died and millions more were left homeless.
