Israel accuses Hamas of using ambulances to smuggle its terrorists. A vehicle was now blown up in front of the entrance to a hospital. The approach caused disgust in diplomatic circles.
The Israeli army said it attacked an ambulance used by the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Friday. She said several terrorists were killed. However, the Hamas Health Ministry said injured people had been transported to the border crossing so they could be treated in Egypt.
According to Palestinian information, the attack on the ambulance convoy took place in front of the entrance to Shifa hospital in Gaza city. According to a Red Crescent statement, 15 people were killed and 60 others were injured. The information provided by both parties could not initially be independently verified.
US: Hamas wanted to smuggle fighters into Egypt
According to a report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the smuggling of Hamas fighters may have been one of the reasons why the Egyptian border crossing at Rafah could not be opened for so long. A senior US official said Hamas had sent Egypt and the US a list of thousands of names that would be considered for evacuation.
When checking the identity, officials found that almost a third could be attributed to Hamas. However, there were no terrorists among the 76 injured Palestinians who were eventually evacuated. The New York Times also reports on the smuggling practice, citing American sources.
Photos show corpses on the street
The shooting of the ambulance convoy caused outrage in the diplomatic world. UN Secretary General António Guterres said he was “shocked”. He said the images of bodies lying in the street were shocking. Images show that the impact also killed or seriously injured civilians who were in the immediate vicinity of the hospital entrance.
Guterres said in a statement that he “has not forgotten” Hamas’ terrorist attacks in Israel. At the same time, the UN chief added that the civilian population in Gaza, including children and women, “has been under siege for almost a month, denied aid, killed and bombed out of their homes.”
The UN Secretary General reiterated his call for a humanitarian ceasefire and stressed that international humanitarian law must be respected. He again called for the release of the hostages. Civilians should also not be used as human shields.
Israel has long accused Hamas of deliberately placing its command centers, weapons depots and rocket launch pads in civilian facilities such as hospitals and schools or in tunnels beneath them – so that they are not bombed from the air.
The WHO calls for a ceasefire
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was also deeply shocked on the X platform (Twitter): “We repeat: patients, medical staff, facilities and ambulances must be protected at all times. Always.” The head of the WHO also called for an immediate ceasefire.
Since large-scale terrorist attacks in early October by ruling Hamas in the Gaza Strip that left 1,400 dead, Israel says it has attacked more than 12,000 targets in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, ground troops are also advancing against Hamas terrorists and military targets.
