“We are building a new level of quality for you.” A beauty salon will soon open in the building not far from Salzburg’s main station. At least that is what the outer facade of the obscure rooms suggests. A stylish company logo has already been pasted over a large surface on the shop window. This does not convince the financial police officers. They know it for sure: illegal gambling flourishes in the so-called salon. Police officers from the special unit ‘Cobra’ force the entrance door – and confiscate several slot machines.
These scenes happened just a few days ago. Authorities in the city of Salzburg checked ten shady shops. They were disguised as a ‘wine bar’, ‘bet’ or ‘cosmetics studio’. Some were under video surveillance. In total, the financial police seized 67 illegal ATMs.
Heavy penalties await the operators. 10,000 euros per machine! And: In one case, an investigation is underway on suspicion of forgery and fraud.
