Dealing with stuttering – “I imagined my counterpart as a cat”

Date:

Thomas Kupetz has stuttered since he was eleven. Therefore, he lived in seclusion during his youth. Today he is chairman of the Austrian Stuttering Self-Help Initiative and heads a self-help group in Linz. And he openly talks about his past and how he overcame his stuttering.

Being locked up for three hours next to cuddly toys at school was the last straw: Thomas Kupetz has stuttered since the strict English teacher and the punishment at the age of eleven. It was a downward spiral: “I was bullied, I was afraid of making mistakes in reading in class and being bullied even more.” To prevent anyone from knowing that he stuttered, he avoided speaking. “At the time, I thought I was the only person in the world who stutters.”
