It has happened again: just one day after a Dutchman fell into a crevasse in Sölden, a similar alpine accident occurred on Sunday on the Hintertux Glacier in Tyrol’s Zillertal. In this case too, the snowboarder – a Luxembourger (49) – was very unlucky.
On Sunday around 1 p.m., the Luxembourger rode with his snowboard on the Hintertux Glacier along the red piste number 3 towards Tuxer-Fernerhaus. “On the last slope in front of the building, due to poor visibility, he went over the edge of the slope into open terrain and fell into a crevasse at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters,” police said.
Fortunately there were witnesses
A blessing in disguise: other winter sports enthusiasts who had seen the accident immediately came to the 49-year-old’s aid. “Another skier drove to the Tuxer-Fernerhaus and started the rescue chain there,” the researchers continued.
Rescue was quickly achieved
After about half an hour, three members of the Tux mountain rescue service and the operations manager on duty were able to rescue the victim unharmed from the crevasse at a depth of about seven meters.
Crevice fall on Tiefenbachferner
A similar accident took place on Saturday in Sölden in the Tyrolean Ötztal. A 46-year-old Dutch snowboarder left the safety of the slopes on Tiefenbachferner and fell into a crevasse. After about four to five meters, the winter sports enthusiast was able to stop the slide and prevent another fall. He was also rescued unharmed.
