Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has announced that his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock has secured Ukraine’s EU membership.
As the war rages in the Middle East, Ukraine is receiving less and less attention. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba considers this a big mistake. After all, as he notes, everything there is still important for Europe.
“I have no doubt that Ukraine will be part of the European Union,” Kuleba told the German newspaper “Welt” (Monday edition). He received “this assurance” from Baerbock.
Joint arms production
Europe is slowly realizing that there is a lot at stake, Kuleba said. “I raised the need for joint arms production at the Berlin conference on EU enlargement. To my surprise, it was positively received by the foreign ministers.”
Militarization of the economy
Against the background that US Republicans are currently blocking the expansion of military aid in Congress, the Ukrainian foreign minister said that Kiev is now investing more in its own weapons production. Domestic production is massively increased and the economy is militarized. “Yet there is still European support, which is often underestimated. Thanks to our friends in Europe and elsewhere, I think we are not afraid of a doomsday scenario,” Kuleba said confidently.
Status of the accession candidate
Ukraine applied for membership of the European Union a few days after the start of Russia’s war of aggression on February 24, 2022. It was given the status of a candidate EU member state in June 2022. This step had a mainly symbolic effect. The main hurdle is the start of accession negotiations.
