That’s gonna be loud! – Eurofighters fly in supersonic mode again

Date:

In the coming days it will probably get loud again in the air: since Monday, the domestic air force has been training with supersonic flights again for two weeks – making it the second supersonic training of this year.

Flying at supersonic speeds is considered an indispensable part of pilot training and education and is essential for the functioning of Austrian air traffic control, the Federal Army explains.

The plan calls for two supersonic flights to take place every day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. As part of the exercise, virtually the entire federal territory will be flown over. To ensure the lowest possible noise level, the machines must travel at great heights, the Ministry of Defense emphasizes.

Can protect the homeland
“This training is indispensable for our air force,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP). According to her, developments in security policy in Europe, but also in Israel, show us every day how fragile peace can be. “It’s even more important to be able to protect your homeland,” Tanner said. Maintaining air sovereignty is crucial for a sovereign state. This must be practiced continuously, even in the supersonic range.

What does supersonic speed mean?
Supersonic speed is reached in air at about 750 miles per hour and means the object travels faster than sound can travel in the same medium. As a Eurofighter approaches this speed, shock waves are created on the aircraft. On the ground these can be perceived as sonic booms. The (loud) strength of the sonic boom varies depending on altitude, terrain structure and weather conditions.
