The Hamburg airport hostage taker is expected to be brought to trial on Monday. As Chief Public Prosecutor Liddy Oechtering announced in Hamburg on Monday, there is currently no arrest warrant. The perpetrator and family were known to the authorities and the father no longer had custody.
The 35-year-old Turkish national was transferred to a pre-trial detention center after completing police measures. Evidence was seized, the suspect was identified and a blood sample was taken, a police spokesperson said.
By law, a suspect must be brought before a magistrate within 24 hours of a provisional arrest for a crime. This decides on pre-trial detention and, if necessary, issues a corresponding arrest warrant.

The family was known to youth care
Meanwhile, it became known that the hostage taker’s family was known to the youth care office of the Stade district. “For social data protection reasons and out of consideration for the welfare of the child, we are unable to provide any further background information at this time,” an authority spokesperson said.
The man no longer had custody of the daughter
For privacy reasons, the police do not want to say where the mother and child are currently staying or how the four-year-old girl is doing. The child was given food and water during the 18-hour hostage situation on the airport tarmac. According to the Stade public prosecutor’s office, the man had already been convicted of kidnapping in the past. He also no longer had custody of his daughter.
Meanwhile, Hamburg Airport resumed normal operations as planned on Monday morning. The first planes left for Lisbon and Frankfurt am Main around 6:00 am. 152 takeoffs and 162 landings are planned for that day.
The security concept must be expanded
The airport announced that it would expand its security concept. “We will implement further structural measures to strengthen possible access points to the security area,” an airport spokeswoman said. Incidents such as the hostage situation show that security concepts must be constantly reassessed.
The safety technicians “carried out initial checks and contacted the responsible authorities”.
