Seven adults and six children: these were the passengers of an Azerbaijani smuggler. At the end of September, the 42-year-old was first chased by the police near Peilstein and then arrested. Before that, he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away without pulling the handbrake.
Because he had further endangered passengers of Turkish origin, in addition to the crime of smuggling, he was also charged with the crime of negligently endangering the public.. The previously blameless father pleaded guilty before the Linz Regional Court and regretted his actions. It was his first tugboat trip and should have been his last.
At home, he supports seven children and two wives, as well as a diabetic mother. Since he had also borrowed money from the bank to open a coffee shop, he had had no choice but to accept the trip.
Not an isolated case
He allegedly collected 400 euros per passenger during the transfer. The sentence ranges from six months to five years, and the previously innocent father of the family got off lightly. The 42-year-old must serve the 15 months; as a deterrent, a (partial) suspended sentence was remitted. Because this trial is by no means an isolated case: this week alone, three more smugglers have to appear before the Linz Regional Court.
