In the Matura exams in the three “major” subjects, German, Mathematics and English, there were more five at the MBO schools (BHS) this year than in the previous year – every eighth student got a spot. At the AHS, on the other hand, the written exams were approximately the same as in 2021. This is according to figures from the Ministry of Education after the results of about 75 percent of the schools were announced.
This shows that about twelve percent of the candidates at the BHS received a negative mark on their mathematics exam (2021: eight percent, 2020: 15 percent), at the AHS that was eleven percent (2021: also eleven percent, 2020 : 22 percent). In English, it puts a five for nine percent of BHS students (2021: four percent, 2020: ten percent) and six percent of AHS students (2021: four percent, 2020: seven percent). There were few changes in German, where eight percent of BHS graduates wrote a “stain” (seven percent each in 2021 and 2020) and seven percent of AHS students (six percent each in 2021 and 2020).
Annual figure is included in the Matura figure
However, the percentage of five in the Matura certificate will be significantly lower. As in the past two years, the annual figure is included in the final figure. So if you have at least a three on the final certificate and have obtained at least 30 percent of the marks on the written exam, you will get a four (or even three) in the Matura certificate despite the negative exam score. If that is not enough, the negative mark can be corrected in the so-called compensation exams in early June. In the previous year, the five-point quotas in German and English were less than one percent and in math 1.2 (BHS) and 2.4 percent (AHS).
“The results are very satisfactory,” Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) said in a statement to APA. “88 to 94 percent of exams are positive on the first try. I am sure that this value will be much higher after taking the annual grade and after the compensatory exams.” From the end of May it will be the turn of the oral Matura. After a break of two years it is mandatory again this year and it will be staggered over several weeks, depending on the school.
