Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, imprisoned in Iran, has started a hunger strike. Reason: poor prison conditions.
Mohammadi sent a message about this to her family from the infamous Ewin prison in the capital Tehran, it was said on Monday.
“We are concerned about the physical condition and health of Narges Mohammadi,” it added.
According to the Instagram post (see above), Mohammadi’s hunger strike is protesting prison conditions: according to this, sick prisoners should be neglected and not given the medical treatment they need. At the same time, she protests against the mandatory headscarf in the Islamic Republic.
The 51-year-old is currently serving a long prison sentence in Tehran’s infamous Ewin prison.
Mohammadi, one of Iran’s best-known human rights activists, received the Nobel Peace Prize this year. According to the Nobel Committee in the Norwegian capital Oslo, she received the prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
