Spanish politician and co-founder of the right-wing populist Vox, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, was shot on the street in Madrid on Thursday. The 78-year-old is said to be “stable” and “conscious.”
According to police, the Vox party co-founder was shot in the face by an unknown person on a street in central Madrid at around 1.30pm local time. Vidal-Quadras was conscious when he was taken to a hospital in the Spanish capital.
Search for motorcyclist
As news agency EFE reports, citing police sources, a search is underway for a motorcyclist who was wearing a black helmet. Further details and a possible motive for the crime were initially unknown. The homicide unit has started an investigation. The murder weapon is said to be a 9 millimeter Parabellum pistol. The president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Pere Aragonès, expressed his full solidarity.
Vidal-Cuadras was a long-time member of Spain’s conservative People’s Party, the regional leader in Catalonia and a member of the European Parliament before co-founding the far-right party Vox. He left Vox shortly after a failed attempt to win a seat in the EU Parliament in 2014.
