A fire broke out in the Danube Tower in Vienna on Thursday morning. Anyone at the top could ‘leave the tower normally’.
Due to the location, alarm level 2 was activated by the professional fire brigade. A short time later, however, the fire was “under control, extinguishing work and ventilation work are still taking place,” said fire brigade spokesman Gerald Schimpf.
The fire broke out in a technical room shortly after 10 a.m. There was smoke development. The fire brigade fought the fire using breathing apparatus. The operation was “calm and orderly”.
The smoldering fire was caused by welding work below the level of the tower cafe, according to a statement from Danube Tower head Hermann Krammer. The tower was closed for a short time for safety reasons. The incident resulted in “no personal injury or property damage.”
The 252-meter-high tower structure is located in Donaustadt and is considered one of Vienna’s landmarks. The viewing platform at a height of 150 meters offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the federal capital.
