Brazen criminals now strike in Carinthian cellars almost every night and steal valuable bicycles. The ‘Krone’ spoke to one of the youngest victims of the bicycle gangs.
“Unknown perpetrators broke into the basement of an apartment building in Villach and stole five e-bikes, three mountain bikes, two gravel bikes and two children’s bicycles,” a police report said on Tuesday. Just two days later the next mailing, with almost exactly the same content. This time the criminals stole ‘only’ six valuable bicycles. Cornelia R. and her family are among the victims of the recent coups in Villach.
“They stole two e-bikes from our broken basement compartment, and my daughter’s mountain bike and my husband’s trail bike were parked in the garage. They took that with them too. In total, they have earned loot worth 15,000 euros from us alone,” the mother of two children told “Krone”.
And the woman from Villach also has a suspicion how the gang was able to reach the basement of the building. “Since the police found no traces of forced entry at the entrance doors, the perpetrators probably waited until my husband drove to work and left the shared garage at half past three in the morning. Only after a few seconds does the gate close automatically. They must have taken advantage of the moment,” the mother of two told “Krone.”
Cornelia R. only found out at work that morning that she and her family had been victims of criminals by telephone: ‘I saw two police officers in the house that morning, but I thought they were the same officers who were also with us’ in a settlement.”
Victim searches for loot on the internet
Since the coup, the woman from Villach has regularly surfed online sales platforms in search of her four bicycles. And it could even be that she has already found what she is looking for, at least in the case of mountain bikes. “Of course, 100% security does not exist, but there are some features that speak for it. I have already informed the police.”
Her husband also alerted the police again after the incident. Just two days after the burglary, he saw three questionable men wandering the streets on their way to the morning shift. Exactly that evening, thirteen bicycles were stolen from cellars and garages in Villach.
