Australia offers asylum to climate refugees from a sinking island

Date:

The picturesque island nation of Tuvalu is doomed by climate change – the island is in danger of sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Now Australia is offering its citizens climate asylum. The islanders are allowed to work, study and live Down Under.

Australia and the island nation of Tuvalu signed the ‘groundbreaking’ agreement on Friday on the sidelines of the regional Pacific Islands Forum: the Australian government announced that Australia would set up a special reception program for the people of Tuvalu, allowing them to come to Australia to live and to work. Initially, 280 people from Tuvalu could come to Australia each year, it was said.

The offer must apply to all islanders
However, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce that his country will eventually offer climate asylum to all 11,200 residents of Tuvalu. The newspaper quotes people familiar with the matter.

Australia complicit in the climate crisis
Tuvalu is a collection of nine low-lying islands in the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. The small island states are severely affected by climate change due to storm surges, erosion and rising sea levels. As one of the world’s largest coal exporters, Australia is one of the causes of the crisis. Many island states therefore view Australia’s move as necessary and morally appropriate.
