Grandma Trude from Wachau (Lower Austria) is rocking the internet with her 104,000 followers on TikTok. During her visit to the Federal Chancellery, she explained the world to Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP).
“I spoke my mind, and I spoke while my beak grew!” Because I don’t care what others think!” Gertrude Lechner from Wachau (Lower Austria) – better known as the legendary Grandma Trude with 104,000 followers on TikTok – should probably enter politics at the age of 92. “I would give you all a beating,” she says cheekily during her visit to the Federal Chancellery. It was her first time there. Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler, who met Grandma Trude during the ‘Star Night in the Wachau’, quickly invited her to talk about the TikTok hype and hate online.

Because, says Edtstadler: “Around 150 million people use TikTok in Europe. Nowadays, many young people get their information exclusively through this platform. It is therefore important that politicians jump on the bandwagon and try to inform and reach young people.”
Edtstadler himself is constantly confronted with hateful rants on social media. Grandma Trude is very clear about how she deals with it: “I don’t even look at these messages. I’m just not interested! Although I often think to myself: what was that wrong or stupid thing you said?” But the 92-year-old, with her four children, twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren as support, takes it all in stride. Besides TikTok (“my grandson always does this nonsense with me”), only one thing is important to her: holding a great-great man in her hands. “If the Lord doesn’t get me sooner.”
Serb (49) arrested after burglary of minister’s home
Almost at the same time as the heart-warming, relaxing appointment with Grandma Trude, Edtstadler received even more positive news: after the burglary of her apartment in Döbling in mid-August, one of the two suspected Serbs identified via DNA traces has now been arrested. It is said to be a 49-year-old who (as reported) was wanted on an EU arrest warrant. According to the first information, he would have confessed.
