The Big Interview – Will there ever be peace again?

Date:

They survived the worst massacre in Israeli history: Ohr Iachbes and Ahia Meir-Malul. In Vienna, where Or’s brother Keren lives, they try to come to terms with the massacre by Hamas terrorists. They tell the “Krone” their story.

The Israelite religious community in Seitenstettengasse in Vienna. Where a terrorist attack took place in 1981 and three years ago in November, the photos of all Israeli hostages kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas terrorists on October 7 are now being posted. The building is closely guarded.

There are flowers in front of the entrance, candles are burning, Austrian and Israeli flags are fluttering in the wind. Or (he turned 27 on October 2) and his girlfriend Ahia, who is two years younger, are waiting inside. The two Israelis are party organizers and were at the trance festival in southern Israel when Hamas stormed the border, brutally killing 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 240.

A month after the massacre, the two survivors came to Vienna, where Or’s brother Keren Iachbes-Meryn lives with his family. The four of us sit at a table and the speakers alternate between German, English and Hebrew. As Or talks, Ahia clicks photos and videos from his cell phone camera that capture their escape on the morning of October 7.

“Krone”: It has been almost exactly a month since the Hamas massacre. How are you doing today, 2,000 miles away from where it happened?
Or Iachbes: Can we please be on a first name basis? – I’m not feeling particularly well. In Israel I had nightmares at night and outbursts of anger during the day. I am confused and unstable and therefore am undergoing psychotherapeutic treatment. Since I’ve been to Vienna I feel a little better, not because of the distance, but because my brother is here. (Or takes Keren’s hand.) I miss Israel.
