Since his pension was too low for him, an 82-year-old in East Frisia decided to turn his account balance into a big plus with drug trafficking. This crazy idea didn’t make him much money – but it did lead to a lawsuit…
The aged sailor’s “drug of choice” was marijuana. On Monday, the Aurich court found him guilty of violating the Narcotics Act and sentenced him to a two-year suspended sentence. The retiree had previously made a lengthy confession. According to these, he had traded several tens of grams of marijuana in the past year and earlier this year.
Judge showed understanding
Given the man’s past, the sentence was relatively lenient. Because he was not a blank slate, as evidenced by his long criminal record. For the president of the court he was a “special case”, write the German media. “We took into account the circumstances in which you did it,” the judge said. He credibly assured that he was a victim of poverty in old age.
Necessity is the mother of ingenuity
As a motive, the man indicated that – after he had been at sea for 35 years, including as a captain – he could not make ends meet with his pension of around 800 euros. At first he improved his budget with gardening. However, due to health problems, this was no longer possible. “This is the very last warning,” said the judge. “I’ll never do anything like that again,” promised the elderly sailor.
