The Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip is increasingly becoming the center of the conflict. The largest hospital in the enclave was apparently unable to continue operations. Israel makes its first concessions after widespread criticism.
In the Israeli war against the terrorist organization Hamas, attention is focused on the situation around the Al-Shifa hospital in the city of Gaza. The Israeli army denied allegations that it fired on the hospital. At the same time, it announced it would assist in the evacuation of babies from the building on Sunday.
A surgeon working for Doctors Without Borders reported the deaths of two premature babies due to power outages.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that it had lost communication with its contacts at Al-Shifa. The WHO said it is “deeply concerned for the safety of medical staff, hundreds of sick and injured patients, including infants requiring life support, and those displaced in hospitals.”
Doctors: Hospital becomes a morgue
An adult patient also died because his ventilator failed. There is no water, no electricity and no food for the patients. Numerous civilians also took refuge on the hospital grounds.
If the fighting is not stopped or at least patients are evacuated, “these hospitals will become morgues,” aid group Doctors Without Borders said on Sunday. At a summit, heads of state and government of Arab and Muslim states called for a “binding” UN resolution to stop Israeli attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip.
Explosions in the hospital
The hospital was “completely surrounded” and there were bombardments nearby, hospital director Mohammed Abu Salmija said. The medical team cannot work and dozens of bodies cannot be removed and buried.
Witnesses at the hospital told AFP on the phone that there was constant gunfire, airstrikes and artillery fire near the hospital complex. Gunshots and explosions could be heard throughout the day through an AFP live camera installed near the hospital.
Hospital staff had asked for the babies to be evacuated to a safer hospital, Israeli Admiral Daniel Hagari had said earlier. “We will provide the necessary support.” Al-Shifa Hospital is the largest clinic in the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian information, the installation had to be stopped on Saturday because the fuel for the electricity generators ran out.
Israel accuses Hamas of setting up a command center beneath the hospital.
