Wave of protests in Europe – A weekend full of violence and intimidation

Date:

Two men desecrated commemorative papers in front of a German synagogue. In Spain, pro-Palestinian protesters fought a street battle with police – and in London there was one of the largest gatherings in recent British history.

There were several anti-Israel demonstrations and anti-Semitic crimes in Europe this weekend.

According to the police, 300,000 people took part in a demonstration in London, the organizers said 800,000. According to police, around 21,000 people took part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Brussels, and in Paris there were around 16,000 participants. Thousands of people also took to the streets in German cities.

But all the demonstrations had something in common: they accused Israel of “genocide” and demanded an end to political support for Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. There were also repeated anti-Semitic slogans. The Jewish state was also denied its right to exist with chants (“From the river to the sea”).

Street fight in Barcelona
In Barcelona there was a street battle with police forces as demonstrators tried to storm a train station. Hundreds of people entered the station building, where they hung a large banner and queued in the track area.

This action prompted Catalan police to move several mobile brigade units to the station, which set up a barrier line to maintain train traffic. Officers used batons at the station doors. There were chaotic scenes. Despite the violent clashes, no arrests have reportedly been made.

However, 150 people were arrested in London. The reason given was that they were throwing fireworks and wearing masks. Police said there were also several hundred counter-protesters in the city center, 82 of whom were arrested to prevent violence between the groups. In chants and banners, demonstrators on Saturday called for “Freedom for Palestine” and an end to Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Police are also investigating videos “filmed yesterday at Waterloo and Victoria stations showing unacceptable insults, including anti-Semitic language and threatening behaviour”. Images on social media show people believed to be Jewish being intimidated and surrounded in London. Islamophobic attacks are also said to have taken place.

Arsonists in Germany
Two arsonists are currently causing horror in Germany. Two men are suspected of setting fire to papers commemorating the people of Israel in the New Synagogue in the city of Erfurt on Sunday evening.

Pieces of paper covered with grave candles were burning on the steps in front of the synagogue, the police announced on Sunday morning. According to the Thuringian State Chancellery, officers temporarily arrested two drunken Libyan men, but they were released.

No one was injured and there was no damage to the synagogue, it was said. According to Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier, the two suspects are asylum seekers. Given its Libyan origins, it is suspected this was a politically motivated crime, he said. State security has become active.

Prime Minister with words of warning
