While Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to sacrifice his own people en masse in the war in Ukraine, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, complains that the country needs significantly more people. The priest already has a concrete solution in store.
“In Russia there are indeed problems with the population,” Patriarch Kirill admitted during the plenary session of the Congress of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to the cleric, it is clear and confirmed by all parties that the country needs more people.
“You can easily increase the population, like a magic wand,” he countered. Women should be prevented from having abortions, the patriarch said.
Very high abortion rate
Russia still has a very high abortion rate. The legislature is now working on initiatives intended to reduce the number of abortions. Attempts are already being made at a regional level to block abortions. The Patriarch now calls for this development to be expanded to the federal level.
At the beginning of November, it was announced that abortions were no longer performed in any private clinic on the Russian-annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Under pressure from the authorities, something similar can be observed in several clinics in the Russian regions of Kursk, Chelyabinsk and Tatarstan.
Lack of desire to have children due to the political situation
In 2022, demand for abortion drugs in Russia will increase by 50 to 60 percent, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported, citing market research agency RNC Pharma. Experts assume that many women do not want children due to current political developments.
