In the north of the Gaza Strip, as a result of the massive fighting, according to the ruling radical Islamic Hamas, no hospital can any longer function. “All hospitals” in northern Gaza are “out of service,” Hamas Deputy Health Minister Yussuf Abu Rish said on Monday. According to Israeli sources, the terrorist group prevented fuel from reaching Al-Shifa hospital.
According to Palestinian information, the Israeli forces are in front of the largest hospital in Gaza City. A tank had taken position in front of the entrance gate, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled health authority, Ashraf Al-Kidra, who remains in the hospital, told Reuters by telephone.
Heavy fighting in hospitals
In recent days there has been growing concern for people in hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip due to massive fighting between the Israeli army and the Islamist Hamas. Since Friday, the fighting has increasingly concentrated around hospitals, especially in the city of Gaza. According to Israeli sources, Hamas has set up its military headquarters in tunnels beneath the Al-Shifa hospital complex.
The clinics, among other things, lack fuel to run generators, leaving them without electricity. Six premature babies and nine seriously ill patients have now died at the Al-Shifa clinic, according to the Deputy Health Minister. Thousands of people have taken refuge on the hospital grounds.
Fuel supply prevented?
The Israeli Defense Forces announced on Sunday that they had secured the delivery of 300 liters of fuel for Al-Shifa Hospital’s generators. They released a video showing soldiers with buses (see above), as well as an audio recording apparently discussing the details of the transfer.
But Hamas prevented the fuel from arriving. In an audio recording on Telegram, a Palestinian health official can be heard saying that Deputy Health Minister Abu Rish does not want the fuel. Hamas denied the accusation.
Klink-boss: Too afraid of tanks
The head of the clinic, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, confirmed the Israeli fuel delivery to Al Araby TV channel, but explained that his employees were too afraid of the Israeli tanks to pick up the buses. “We want every drop of fuel, but I have told the Israeli army that it must be sent through the Red Crescent or another international organization,” Abu Salmiya said.
On Saturday, the hospital announced that there were 39 premature babies in the neonatal unit and that nurses were now ‘manually’ ventilating the babies. A doctor from the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders said 17 patients were in intensive care.
Hamas: more than 11,000 dead in Gaza
Since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, the Israeli army has launched massive attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip, and ground forces have now also invaded Palestinian territory. According to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified, 11,180 people were killed on Sunday evening. About half of the 2.4 million inhabitants in the narrow coastal area are on the run.
Hundreds of fighters from Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the US and EU, entered Israel on October 7 and committed atrocities, mainly against civilians, including many children. According to Israeli information, about 1,200 people were killed in Israel and about 240 people were taken hostage to the Gaza Strip.
