It’s that time of year when we give up daylight saving time and come to the end of the year. It is also the moment when the new highway vignette goes on sale. Even before we look back on the past year, we can already look forward to the highway toll: the digital vignette will be available from Tuesday.
The sticker – for 2024 it will be sunny yellow – will only be available from the usual sales points from November 22. These – for example car clubs, petrol stations, tobacconists, Forstinger and ATU – are allowed to sell the digital version more than a week in advance. It can also be obtained online from Asfinag or in the companion app.
The advantages of the digital vignette are clear: once the license plate has been registered, it no longer needs to be stuck and scraped off and in the event of a window break, a replacement vignette is no longer necessary. Even owners of variable license plates no longer need a separate vignette for each vehicle. If you purchase a digital vignette at a physical point of sale, it is valid immediately after purchase, because the withdrawal period of 18 days before the start of validity (applies to online purchases) does not apply. The validity of the 2024 vignettes starts on December 1, 2023.
What is new is that from December 1 you can also re-register the digital vignette if, for example, you have received a new license plate due to a change of vehicle (costs 18 euros). However, you have to take care of it. For example, people often forget to register again if they have changed their place of residence.
If you want to switch from the self-adhesive to the digital vignette ‘during the year’, you can do so free of charge in only two cases: in the event of breakage of the windscreen or in the event of a total loss.
1-day vignette from December
The 1-day vignette has been newly added. As the name suggests, this vignette is only valid for one day and is therefore particularly interesting for tourists and other people passing through. It costs 8.60 euros.
The price for the ten-day vignette, which is mainly used by holidaymakers, will be increased from 9.90 to 11.50 euros. The two-month vignette will now cost 28.90 euros instead of 29 euros. The annual vignette remains exceptionally stable in price. The vignette prices for truck tolls will also not be adjusted to inflation next year. However, the costs of CO₂ emissions from trucks are included in the toll. A toll increase of approximately 7.4 percent is planned for 2024.
The prices for the 2024 vignette at a glance:
- Annual vignette: 96.40 euros for cars or 38.50 euros for motorcycles
- Two-month vignette: 28.90 euros for cars or 11.50 euros for motorcycles
- Ten-day vignette: 11.50 euros for cars or 4.60 euros for motorcycles
- 1-day vignette: 8.60 euros for cars or 3.40 euros for motorcycles
As always, the annual vignette is valid for 14 months, starting on December 1, 2023 and ending on January 31, 2025. All motor vehicles up to 3.5 tons are required to have a vignette.
Another tip: It is really proactive to activate the subscription service when purchasing the new digital vignette. The validity of an annual vignette will then be automatically extended and you cannot forget to purchase the vignette. This also works if you switch to a new car, as long as you continue to use your license plate – the vignette is attached to it.
