GeoSphere Austria issued a precipitation warning for parts of Tyrol and Vorarlberg on Tuesday. It is expected to rain heavily in some places from the afternoon. The snow line only gradually decreases to lower altitudes. Mudslides, landslides and local flooding are to be feared.
“A warm front will bring heavy rain to the high mountains, and with a cold front the following night the snow line will slowly drop to around 1,500 meters,” GeoSphere says.
For Vorarlberg, the Arlberg-Silvretta region, the Ausserfern and for the northern edge of the Tyrolean Alps, the precipitation warning was partly raised to the warning level “orange”.
Mudslides and flooding possible
Regional disruptions to road and rail traffic are expected. The risk of mudslides and landslides increases and flooding can occur in small and medium-sized rivers.
Based on these predictions, the state of Tyrol also warns. “The population is urged to avoid unnecessary trips and walks and to close windows, doors and skylights,” emphasizes Elmar Rizzoli, head of the Tyrolean Center for Crisis and Disaster Management.
After the weather calms down, the next cold front arrives
According to GeoSphere Austria, the weather should calm down on Wednesday morning. “The next strong cold front will arrive on Friday with a chance of snowfall well below 1000 meters,” the report concludes.
