The lawsuit against former US President Donald Trump over allegations of attempted election manipulation in the state of Georgia is not expected to be completed until after the next presidential election.
Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis said Tuesday that the trial could drag on until the winter of 2024 or early 2025. “I think the trial will last many months,” she said.
The next US presidential election is scheduled for November next year. So far, Donald Trump has the best chance among opposition Republicans to be nominated as a challenger to President Joe Biden.
Willis dismissed concerns about possible impact on the election campaign, stressing that she “does not take into account an election cycle or season” when handling criminal cases. The judge presiding over the case has not yet set a trial date.
Trump is accused of trying to influence the election results in his favor in the 2020 presidential elections in Georgia. The former president has pleaded not guilty.
