In the Northern Alps – Up to one and a half meters of fresh snow on the mountains

Date:

After the heavy rain with a snow line of over 2000 meters, it may snow up to 1200 meters on Wednesday. It should be at least sugary on Friday even in the Inn Valley – and therefore also in Innsbruck. In northern Tyrol, more than a meter of fresh snow is expected on Sunday at altitudes above 2,000 to 2,500 meters.

GeoSphere Austria has issued an orange rain warning for the Lechtal and Tannheimer Tal for Tuesday afternoon, although the precipitation situation is expected to improve again on Wednesday. “It will be changeable, showers will be expected again and again,” says meteorologist Konstantin Brandes of the weather service UBIMET. The snowfall line, which was above 2000 meters on Tuesday, is expected to drop to 1200 to 1500 meters.

Innsbruck probably covered in sugar
After a dry and partly sunny Thursday, Tyrol reached a new low with precipitation on Friday. “It should snow all the way to Innsbruck on Friday evening,” Brandes predicts. But because the ground is still too warm, the flakes hardly remain there. By Sunday at the latest, a warm front will cause the snow line to rise again to above 2000 meters and it will rain occasionally in the valley.

“A real start of winter is not yet in sight in the medium term, although at high altitudes in the north, from 2000 to 2500 meters, there may be between one and one and a half meters of fresh snow on Sunday,” says the meteorologist.

30 centimeters of fresh snow in Kühtai
Towards the south there is usually less precipitation, but in Kühtai there should still be enough for 30 centimeters of snow. In the valley areas, double-digit temperatures will continue again next week.

Watch out for wind plates
Sellrain ski touring and avalanche expert Lukas Ruetz advises potential ski touring enthusiasts to switch to the glacier ski areas for the time being. At the same time, Patrick Nairz, Tyrol’s top avalanche warning officer, calls on mountain enthusiasts to pay special attention to wind slabs at these high altitudes.
