Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing increasing international criticism over his army’s actions in the Gaza Strip. Pressure from relatives of the Hamas hostages to finally reveal the government’s positions in negotiations for the release of their loved ones is also increasing. But Netanyahu is unimpressed and continues to stick to his “sacred mission.”
The Israeli head of government reiterated on Wednesday that his army would ensure that there would no longer be a safe place for the radical Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. “We will find and destroy Hamas, and we will bring back the hostages,” Netanyahu said during a visit to a military base in Israel.
Netanyahu: “There is no shelter for Hamas”
These two missions are ‘sacred’, the head of government emphasized. There is no place in the Gaza Strip that Israel will not reach, “no hiding place for the Hamas killers.”
“We were told not to invade Gaza – and we did. We were told we would not reach the outskirts of Gaza City, and we did. We were told that we could not enter Al-Shifa Hospital, and we did so,” Netanyahu continued.
US government: ‘Does not authorize hospital use’
After days of fighting around Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, Israeli soldiers finally stormed the building on Wednesday and searched it for suspected Hamas operatives. Israel suspects that the militia has set up a command center there, an assumption also shared by the United States.
However, John Kirby, communications director of the US National Security Council, stressed that Washington had “not authorized their military operations around the hospital.” Such decisions would be made by the Israeli army.
