The US state of New York has sued beverage and snack giant PepsiCo for environmental pollution caused by discarded plastic bottles and packaging. The company is accused of being responsible for more than 17 percent of the waste near the Upstate Buffalo River.
The plastic waste can end up in drinking water after extraction and lead to health problems, Attorney General Letitia James said on Wednesday. The lawsuit states that plastic waste causes premature puberty in girls, reduces sperm count and changes the functions of the reproductive organs, among other things. Moreover, it is responsible for obesity and increases the incidence of cancer.
Such effects of plastic additives have been observed in mammals. The researchers assume that the same consequences can also be observed in humans.
deceived the public
Attorney General Letitia James accuses the major manufacturer of being responsible for more than 17 percent of the waste near the Upstate Buffalo River through its brands, thereby creating a public nuisance. The company also failed to inform consumers about the potential risks of its more than 100 brands and misled the public about its efforts to prevent plastic pollution.
In addition to Pepsi Cola, the group’s brands in the US include Cheetos, Cracker Jack, Doritos, Lipton and Tostitos. The goal of the lawsuit is to get Pepsi to avoid plastic waste and clean up pollution.
