The lawyer had requested a psychiatric report on the suspect’s mental health, but the expert confirmed this. The verdict was ultimately harsh: the man was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for attempted murder. The judgment is not final. The car was also seized, a spokesperson for the regional court said.
Already convicted nine times
The lawyer explained the lack of memory of the incident on February 9, which the suspect had spoken about several times in court on the first day of the trial, saying that this was possibly due to a combination of high alcohol and several sedatives tablets. that his client had swallowed that day. The suspect, who according to the judge had already been convicted nine times for bodily harm (under the influence), had a blood alcohol level of 1.6 at the time of the crime. It was only “thanks to chance that it remained an attempted murder,” the prosecutor argued.
Defendant does not remember
“It must have been something, but I don’t know what,” the suspect told the jury. He could only remember ‘photos’, one with a rubbish bin. He said nothing about attacking the 50-year-old and shouted: “I’ll kill you.” “He is my friend, we have never had a fight, I have known him for so long,” he said through tears at the start of the trial. He regrets everything. He only pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
This friend was taken to the hospital with multiple broken legs and bruises and had to undergo surgery. He spent several weeks in a wheelchair with two legs in plaster. It was still unclear whether the self-employed painter would be able to continue his business together with his son.
