Fear of failure – Students feel increasingly under pressure to perform

Date:

A large proportion of young people in Austria feel increasingly pressured to get grades, according to an online survey presented on Thursday on behalf of the tutoring institute “Lernquadrat”. Nearly half of the 500 students surveyed between the ages of 15 and 19 reported increasing pressure to perform, and almost as many reported a growing fear of failure. According to the research, the pressure does not come from the family, but from the young people themselves.

According to the broadcast, during “middle school age” it becomes more difficult for young people to talk to their families about school. Three quarters of parents are still interested in their children’s academic performance and 57 percent of young people surveyed would find it useful to be able to talk to their family about their school concerns.

At the same time, almost every second young person does not care about the opinion of their parents and a quarter of those surveyed assume that their parents can no longer accurately assess their performance anyway. However, one in five young people also indicate that they can no longer find anyone at home to talk to about school concerns.

Young people put pressure on themselves
According to the survey conducted before the end of the school year in May and June, young people of this age mainly put pressure on themselves to perform; it rarely comes from the family, family psychologist Karin Alt is quoted in the broadcast. “Many young people even try not to burden the family with their school problems and solve everything themselves.” Only ten percent of respondents fear possible punishment if they fail in school; there is more comfort at home – at least where better students were scolded. More than a third of parents also offer their children tutoring if their grades are poor.

According to the research, there is a link between parental interest and their children’s academic success: 79 percent of good students indicate that their parents are very interested in their grades, while 55 percent of poor students indicate that they are very interested in their grades. . At the same time, 25 percent of poor students report that their families have many worries, but only 14 percent of good students do.

According to the research, the family setup also plays a role in the extent to which young people can deal with school problems. Children of single parents therefore feel less heard and understood at home and are much more likely to report concerns and fears about the future in connection with school.
