57 percent of Austrians regularly feel disgusted when they use public toilets. 22 percent only use such toilets in emergencies. Most of all, people are afraid to attack things there.
85 percent find the toilet seat disgusting, followed by the toilet brush in second place at 72 percent. A survey commissioned by hygiene manufacturer Hagleitner showed that 70 percent of people are afraid of the door handles of public toilets.
Hit list of disgust factors
66 percent shudder at hygiene products such as tampons, panty liners and condoms lying around. Fifth among the disgust factors is the garbage can, which disgusts 50 percent, Hagleitner reported on the occasion of World Toilet Day on November 19.
What still bothers visitors in quiet places in public spaces: toilet paper is regularly missing, says 37 percent of respondents. 42 percent experience the same with soap. 52.7 percent often notice that the waste container overflows.
1000 people interviewed
The study also collected behavioral patterns of Austrians. 51 percent of respondents throw away tampons in the toilet, 43 percent throw away sanitary towels and/or panty liners and 18 percent throw away condoms. Incontinence pads eliminate eleven percent. 1,000 people – 500 women and 500 men – aged 18 to 65 were interviewed. The market research platform Appinio from Hamburg conducted the online research on behalf of the company Hagleitner, headquartered in Zell am See.
