Austrians enjoy more free time. Especially on Sundays, people devote themselves to useless activities, such as watching television. 58 percent prefer to do this on “the Day of the Lord.” Sleeping in and walking come second and third.
Austrians have more and more free time, at least that is evident from a recent study by the Linzer opinion research institute IMAS*. In contrast to 1979, this reach has more than doubled, from three to six hours and 48 minutes per day. For 58 percent of the population, watching television is clearly their favorite Sunday activity.
Sunday as a day of relaxation
In addition to watching TV, this day is regularly used to sleep in (46 percent) and go for a walk (39 percent). Meeting friends and family is what 38 percent of respondents do. Internet or social media are of interest to 33 and 23 percent respectively on Sunday.
The leisure budget increased by more than two hours
If you look at the long-term equation, work-life balance has also improved. According to the study, the leisure budget of the group of working people increased from two hours 22 minutes to four hours 38 minutes between 1979 and 2023.
60 percent of the working population never works on weekends, while ten percent works every weekend.
