Revolution in agriculture: The agricultural machinery industry has invested hundreds of millions of euros in AI research, partnered with robotics start-ups and designed tractors with batteries and fuel cells. The first autonomous tractors are just around the corner and in a few years they could be affordable even for small businesses. But they also raise questions that farmers previously did not have to ask themselves.
American supplier John Deere is about to launch its first autonomous tractor on the market. The German manufacturer CLAAS already supplies a crawler robot agricultural machine developed together with the start-up AgXeed that can perform various tasks. The first buyers will include large companies that can afford it. However, research into affordable technology for small farmers is already being conducted in Japan. Until it comes to market, the industry will have to clarify sensitive questions about ongoing reimbursement and data protection.
