Frightening incident in broad daylight in Vienna: A man suddenly grabbed a seven-year-old girl on the street on Wednesday morning and tried to snatch her away from her mother (41). Thanks to the courageous intervention of a park sheriff, something worse was prevented. The man, who was said to be mentally ill, would be free.
The 41-year-old was walking with her daughter on Währinger Strasse at 8.15 am on Wednesday when the 54-year-old man suddenly grabbed the girl and kicked her mother. However, the woman held her daughter and screamed loudly for help.
A park sheriff became aware of the situation and stood protectively in front of the woman and her daughter. At the same time he alerted the police.
Already known to the police
The 54-year-old handed over his passport but then fled. As the police announced, it was already known that the Austrian citizen had psychological problems as a result of past official actions. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, in the past he wanted to direct traffic or travel with a radio on his shoulder “because it would keep the vibrations out of his head.” Action has already been taken against the man several times under the Housing Act and he has subsequently been treated in psychiatric institutions.
This time the 54-year-old was released on suspicion of attempted bodily harm and attempted deprivation of liberty.
