ICC called for: Five states want new investigation into Palestine

Date:

Five states have now appealed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague about the situation in Palestine. The governments of South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, the Comoros and Djibouti want further research into this.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been investigating the situation in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories since March 2021. These include accusations of crimes by the Israeli army, Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups. Now South Africa, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Comoros and Djibouti want investigations expanded into the “escalation of clashes and violence” since the “attacks” in October 2023.

South Africa supports the application
The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already stated that it supports the request and has also called on other signatory states to do so. Pretoria hopes “that the situation in Palestine will be treated as a priority by the ICC to bring justice to the victims of these serious crimes.”

In early November, the relatives of several Israeli hostages of Hamas filed a criminal complaint with the ICC. The families are demanding that the terrorist organization Hamas be prosecuted for genocide and that arrest warrants be issued for the group’s leaders.

Israel is not a member of the ICC
In principle, anyone can turn to the criminal court. The court decides whether a case will be investigated or not. Responsibilities include, for example, prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Palestinians joined the court in 2015, but Israel is not a member of the ICC.

The office of ICC Chief Prosecutor Khan recently announced that it is continuously collecting information about the situation of the Palestinians. Hundreds of fighters from the radical Islamist Hamas invaded Israel on October 7, mainly committing atrocities against civilians. According to Israeli figures, around 12,000 people were killed and another 240 were taken to the Gaza Strip.

In response, the Israeli army began massive attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip, and ground forces later moved into the area. According to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified, around 12,000 people have been killed on Palestinian territory so far.
