Preventing major damage – carpentry fire: roofer responded perfectly

Date:

In the densely built-up center of Bad Schwanberg in western Styria, a fire in a carpentry workshop could have had devastating consequences. But the employees and an uninvolved roofer responded perfectly.

The fire in the Schwanberg carpentry workshop started on Friday morning next to a workshop oven. The employees quickly noticed the fire and started fighting the fire with hand fire extinguishers. “Almost at the same time, an uninvolved roofer, who could see from a construction site far away the fire-affected company, made an emergency call with the presence of mind,” the fire brigade report said.

The comrades entered the smoke-filled workshop wearing heavy breathing apparatus and completely extinguished the fire. Because a nest of cinders was also found in the ceiling structure of the hall, opening the roof was unavoidable.

A later alarm could have been disastrous
“Ultimately, the owner of the carpentry workshop can call it a blessing in disguise. Due to the naturally occurring fire load in the wood processing plant, it would have been unthinkable if there had been any delay in fighting the fire or alerting the fire brigade in the densely built-up area of Bad Schwanberg. “Greater damage was prevented through optimal action by all involved,” praises the fire brigade.

The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be determined by the police. 54 emergency services from five fire brigades (Bad Schwanberg, Gressenberg, Grünberg-Aichegg, Hollenegg, Steyergg) were deployed, as well as the breathing apparatus of the Magna-Lannach fire brigade and the emergency control vehicle of the Wildbach fire brigade.
