He is an absolute legend in the ‘Star Trek’ universe: Jonathan Frakes. As Commander William Riker, he piloted the Enterprise through countless space adventures. Over the weekend, the 71-year-old landed in the exhibition hall of the Vienna Comic Con. Krone+ met him for an interview.
Crown: “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry once imagined a world in which capitalism, racism and oppression have long been overcome. Are the moral values of ‘Star Trek’ more important and relevant than ever in these sad times, when terrible wars are raging in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine?
Jonathan Frakes: They were always current. Always. The big question is why we haven’t been wise enough to listen to Gene Roddenberry over the past fifty years. The climate catastrophe would not be so bad, people would be more civil towards each other, there would be no racism and no sexism. We discuss, appreciate and constantly refer to all these elements that he so skillfully drew in ‘Star Trek’. Unfortunately, we hardly implement them in real life. Worse still, everything is going in the opposite direction, especially in my home country, the US. It’s really disturbing.
