The town of Grindavik in Iceland is currently threatened by a volcanic eruption. About 3,700 people were removed from their homes as a precaution. You now have to prepare to live somewhere else for months.
This was announced on Saturday by the director of Civil Protection, Vidir Reynisson. Several houses have already been damaged. The weather service in Iceland believes it is likely that liquid rock will emerge from a magma tunnel in the southwestern part of the country, which has been active for several weeks. It is still unclear where exactly the lava would originate.
Several earthquakes at night
A number of earthquakes were also recorded on Sunday night, including one with a magnitude of 3.7, the weather service said. The tremors were also felt in the capital region of Reykjavik. According to the weather service, the earthquakes may indicate that magma in the Earth’s crust has risen far up. In Grindavik, clear cracks were visible on the ground.
The affected city is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik. The residents had to leave their homes a week ago because there is an approximately 15 kilometer long magma tunnel to the seabed under Grindavik (see video above). One of the country’s most famous tourist attractions, the nearby Blue Lagoon, was closed as a precaution.
