A total of one hundred emergency services from five fire brigades sacrificed their Sunday afternoon to help a pilot in distress and his two passengers. Because the landing gear of the small plane could no longer be extended, a safe landing was not possible.

“The pilot made an emergency call via Austro Control, which was transferred to us,” Lick tells the “Krone”. The fire brigade quickly resolved the situation by spraying a foam carpet at Friesach airport near Micheldorf. “It acts as a lubricant,” says Lick.
To use up the fuel and so that the fire brigade had enough time to spread the foam carpet, the pilot had to circle in the airspace above the airport for an hour.
Ultimately, he managed to land his sport plane on the foam without any problems. No one was injured.
