A driver and vehicle check ended in the early hours of Monday morning when a 44-year-old man jumped into the Danube Canal in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. The man did not have a valid driver’s license and did not want to give his name to the officers. He had to be rescued from the water.
When the man was informed by officials about the situation and the consequences around 1.15 am, he suddenly fled down an embankment in the opposite direction of travel towards the A4 and jumped into the Danube Canal.
Had to be rescued from the Danube Canal
Only a few seconds later the man returned as his soaked clothing made him lose his strength. The 44-year-old had to be rescued from the water by officers and supporting colleagues from the police dog unit. He then had to receive emergency medical care from the professional rescue team and be temporarily taken to a hospital.
It was forbidden to enter and stay there
After further investigation, it also turned out that the man was subject to an entry and residence ban. He is currently in a police detention center. He was also caught with several traffic violations.
