A crane found dead near Grafenstein tested positive for bird flu. There is no danger to humans, but increased safety measures for poultry farmers are necessary.
After cases have already occurred in Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland this winter season, which has just started, a suspected case of bird flu in a wild bird has now been confirmed in Carinthia. Last weekend, a dead crane was found in the municipality of Grafenstein and now AGES has announced the results of the investigation to the state of Carinthia: it concerns avian flu or bird flu, also called bird flu. There is no danger to humans as transmission is only possible in extremely rare cases and with very close contact with infected poultry. However, all poultry farmers must strictly adhere to increased safety measures.
Avoid contact with wild birds
“The primary goal should be to prevent this from spreading to our poultry farms,” said agriculture official LHStv. Martin Gruber, who is also responsible for animal diseases. Above all, any contact between poultry flocks and wild birds should be prevented. Poultry and other captive birds should be kept separate from ducks and geese. Whether mandatory stables should be reintroduced for larger companies is currently being discussed at the level of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
The entire state of Carinthia and the rest of Austria have been considered areas at increased risk of bird flu since spring. For further containment and early detection, wild birds found dead should not be handled and should be immediately reported to the district administration or official veterinarians.
