The 40-year-old Moldovan wanted to drive his car from Fernpassstrasse to the intersection with Weißhausstrasse in Vils. According to his own statements, he first stopped at the stop sign around 6:20 p.m. and then drove into the intersection. He had his wife and two children on board.
