For years Australian surgeon Kenneth Elliott was held captive by terrorists in Burkina Faso – now the 88-year-old has been released. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said he was “safe and well”.
The doctor, together with his wife, had set up a clinic in the city of Djibo in the north of the country and had lived in the West African country for about 40 years. In 2016, he and his wife Jocelyn were kidnapped by a militant group, but the woman was released a year later.
Reunited with family
“I am very pleased to announce that Dr Kenneth Elliott has been released after more than seven years of captivity in West Africa,” Foreign Secretary Wong said on Friday. He will be reunited with his family.
Doctor needs “time and privacy” now
Details of the man’s release have not been released. In a statement, the family thanked “the Australian government and everyone who has campaigned for his release over time.” Elliott now “needs time and privacy to rest and recuperate”.
