Finland has asked the EU border protection agency Frontex for help in the face of an increasing number of undocumented migrants from Russia. The border guard announced on Wednesday that it concerned personnel and technical equipment. Helsinki accuses Moscow of artificially causing the crisis.
Finnish media reported that the Border Guard had officially asked the armed forces for help in building barbed wire barriers at the border stations.
Project manager Ismo Kurki told the Lännen newspaper group that border guards had already started setting up additional barriers at the border stations with Russia, “not only at the northern border crossings, but everywhere.”
The EU is showing willingness to help
EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said in the European Parliament on Tuesday evening that the European Commission was in constant contact with Finland and was ready to help if the situation changed. According to them, Finland has requested 60 Frontex officials.
The Finnish government accuses Russia of increasingly allowing migrants, especially from the Middle East, to cross the border into Finland without the necessary documents, where they seek asylum. Moscow denies this.
First border crossings closed
Finland closed four border crossings this weekend, conveniently located near St. Petersburg, and has since only accepted asylum applications at the Vartius and Salla crossings, hundreds of miles further north. More and more asylum seekers have also reported there in recent days. The Finnish government discussed additional steps.
