UN Children’s Fund: – Gaza Strip “most dangerous place” for children

Date:

The UN Children’s Fund currently considers the Gaza Strip to be the ‘most dangerous place in the world for a child’. Not only the acts of war, which have already killed thousands of children, but also the danger of epidemics and malnutrition threaten the lives of the youngest children.

UNICEF head Catherine Russell reported to the UN Security Council on Wednesday about the impressions she had gained on the ground. According to reports, more than 5,300 children have been killed since the Islamist Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. That’s 115 children per day and about 40 percent of the total fatalities, Russell said. “This is unprecedented.” Another 1,200 children are missing. Some of them are probably buried under the rubble of buildings.

The head of UNICEF warned of the risk of disease for children and the threat of malnutrition. “The children in Gaza are in grave danger due to catastrophic living conditions. One million children – all children in the area – are at risk of food insecurity.”

“Humanitarian ceasefire” instead of “humanitarian pause”
Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Russell welcomed the agreement on the release of hostages and a multi-day ceasefire. At the same time, she warned that “humanitarian interruptions” were “simply not enough.” To end the ‘massacre’ a ‘humanitarian ceasefire’ was necessary.
