Called up at short notice – Sobotka wants to declare himself a special presidential candidate

Date:

The recently announced charges against National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka will be discussed on Wednesday evening at a special presidential meeting called by the opposition factions. The ÖVP man will have to answer questions from the speakers of parliament.

Sobotka invited people to a corresponding meeting – immediately after the National Council meeting on Wednesday. As things stand, the meeting should start around 7:30 p.m.

Incitement to abuse of office?
The accusations are related to the fact that ex-section chief Christian Pilnacek, who recently died, spoke privately in a bar about the fact that Sobotka had accused him of never rejecting investigations.

Last summer’s conversation was secretly recorded and – as reported – leaked to the “Krone”. Sobotka’s spokesperson had already rejected Pilnacek’s story on Tuesday.

The opposition is calling for resignation
The issue had already been discussed in the National Council during the plenary day on Wednesday morning. The opposition unanimously called for the resignation of the head of parliament, while the ÖVP spoke of an “undignified spectacle”. The Greens did not speak out.

Acting SPÖ club president Philip Kucher said during the debate he started on the regulations that Sobotka must know what to do to prevent damage to the republic. He damages the office: “Enough is enough.” The FPÖ and NEOS also called on Sobotka to resign. However, this is considered unlikely.
