In 2022, only just under twelve percent of Austrian men underwent a preventive examination. Although the number of appointments for people over 15 has increased by 24,000 to approximately 525,000, it remains clear that men are less likely to find their way to the doctor. In 2022, there were a total of 26.1 million sick days in Austria.
The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) emphasized that men are significantly underrepresented compared to women, despite an increasing number of preventive examinations.
While approximately 624,000 women, equivalent to approximately 14 percent of the population, have taken preventive measures, this rate among men is only just under twelve percent.
“Prevention is the key to early detection and control of potential health risks. That is why it is important that we increase awareness of preventive measures and regular health checks – especially among the male population,” emphasized Bernhard Wurzer, Managing Director of ÖGK.
Overall, the use of preventive examinations increases with age. Most basic preventive examinations are registered in the age group between 55 and 59 years.
26.1 million sick leave days in 2022
The ÖGK recorded approximately 26.1 million sick days last year. The most common reasons for sick leave among men were diseases of the respiratory tract, musculoskeletal system or connective tissue or injuries, poisoning or other consequences of external causes.
Prostate MRI and coronary CT will be part of the service catalog in the future
