Due to falling temperatures, Ukraine is currently no longer able to generate enough energy to meet the growing needs of the country’s population.
Grid operator Ukrenergo announced on social media on Thursday: “Electricity consumption continues to rise and a shortage is emerging in the energy system.”
In response, Ukrenergo has already asked for support from energy suppliers in neighboring Romania, Slovakia and Poland.
As a result of the Russian attacks and “other reasons,” 409 settlements in the country are currently without electricity, according to Ukrenergo. This affects the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions.
Energy infrastructure attacked en masse
Last winter, Russia massively targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. According to Ukrenergo, repairs are still underway at several thermal power plants. The increasing energy consumption due to winter places an additional burden on production facilities, which need to be maintained and repaired.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in October that Russia would try to destroy his country’s power supply this winter. For protection, Kiev demanded additional air defense systems from its Western allies.
Medvedev warns: “Zelenskyj will not grow up to be an old man”
Russia’s former head of state and current chairman of the National Defense Council threatened Ukrainian President Zelensky on Thursday that he would “not become an old man” (see video above). Zelensky had recently announced that he had escaped several assassination attempts since the start of the war.
